Arbor Day: The Beauty of Wedding Tree Planting Ceremonies
In honor of National Arbor Day, we are highlighting the beautiful tradition of wedding tree planting ceremonies. Unity tree ceremonies are a perfect ritual for those who are environmentally conscious or who want to add a unique, modern element to their special day. Plus, these ceremonies have no specific religious ties, so it can be incorporated into any wedding and customized to the bride and groom’s preferences.
To perform a tree planting ceremony, a potted tree, or plant, of the couple’s choice is typically placed near the altar. Any type of tree can be used, but some couples choose one with a specific meaning to them or for what it stands for - for example oak trees are usually associated with strength, or birch trees with new beginnings.
To begin, the bride and groom both pour in separate containers of soil, symbolizing their lives blending together as one. Some couple’s choose to use dirt from their childhood backyards to illustrate their family ties and the continuity of those special connections. The couple then waters the tree together to help it develop deep roots and flourish, similar to their marriage.
Enjoy a few photos of couples participating in their own tree planting ceremonies, and consider adding this practice to your own wedding itinerary.
